Black-Headed Python (Aspidites Melanocephalus)
General Info :
They are so popular with herpetoculturists , but they were very expensive , 5000$ to become an owner .
Appearance :
Black-Headed pythons are of variable ground color , but usually are prominently banded snakes . The mid-dorsal
area is the darkest and the straw-yellow and reddish-brown bands are most prominent laterally . The belly is an
unrelieved yellow . It has no heatpits .
Sizes :
Most are 5 to 7 feet (1.5-2.1M) or smaller , black-heads can approach 8 feet (2.4M) in total length . They are
moderately heavybodied and are powerful constrictors .
Range & Habitat :
Northern Australia , tropical and subtropical grasslands and hills .
Food :
Snakes , small mammals and ground-nesting birds
Breeding :
Egg-laying up to about 5-10 eggs .
My Notes :
The 2 species in the genus Aspidites , the black-headed , A.Melanocephalus and the non-black headed A.Ramsayi , are among
the most primitive of pythons . Black-Headed pythons remain among the most expensive of the constricting snakes .
Fortunately , they have also proven hardy and undemanding in captivity . They are primarily noctural , seeking seclusion
during the hours if daylight . |
