Diamond Python (Morelia Spilota Spilota)
General Info :
The diamond python is a small (about 6feet 1.8m) and slender species from eastern New South Wales . Unlike
its carpet python relatives , some of which have been bred in captivity with relative ease , this was not true
of the diamond python .
Appearance :
A handsome snake that is usually black with a white spot on almost every scale . Some patches of scales may be completely black or white , forming a pattern of spots on the back and stripes on the flanks . It has heat pits in the scales around the mouth .
Sizes :
To 2m or slightly more
Range & Habitat :
NE Australia . Grassland , rocky outcrops and lightly wooded areas ; in caves and hollow trees .
Food :
Small mammals , including bats , birds and lizards .
Breeding :
Egg-laying , with clutches of 4-16 eggs . Female coils around eggs until they hatch .
My Notes :
Diamond pythons like areas of seclusion , both on the floor of the cage and in an elevated hide box . They
will eat variety of small rodents . Adults are fairly docile ; the young are nippy until they settle down to a
routine and become more adept at identifying food and enemies . |
